Diamond education: The 4Cs and why you must know them
July 5, 2018 • 3 min read
Carats
This refers to the total weight of a diamond NOT size. Weight is a factor that should be considered when purchasing a princess cut diamond ring, but it is not as important as other factors such as cut that have a direct influence over the sparkle and visual appeal of the stone. Two diamonds of the same carat weight may have substantial differences in price depending on the other 3 factors.
Colour
The colour grade of a white diamond ranges alphabetically from D-Z, with those that are colourless or near colourless the rarest and therefore most valuable. Despite minor colour differences being difficult to detect with the naked eye, they often result in substantial price differences.
Clarity
The level of clarity ranges from flawless to inclusions that are visible to the naked eye. Clarity is determined by the number and extent to which imperfections prevent light from entering the stone, dulling its beauty and brilliance. Many imperfections are not visible to the naked eye or have very little impact on the appearance and these are often a fraction of the price of a truly flawless diamond.
Cut
Diamond cut refers to the proportions of a stone, not its shape as many believe. The cut of a diamond controls its brilliance, making it the most important component of the 4Cs. Immense skill is required to cut a stone so that its proportions, symmetry and polish reflect as much light as possible. This improves the desirable visual effects of a stone such as its brightness, fire and scintillation, as the facets are perfectly arranged to create a powerful sparkle and stunning shine.
