Tips on getting the perfect engagement ring photo

Did your partner just pop the big question? A congratulation is in order! Your proposal is an exciting milestone for both you and your partner. It is a momentous stage in your life, as it is one step closer to your future together!

But before you get ahead of yourself with your wedding planning, you’ll want to share your exciting news with your friends and family through a public announcement! After telling those closest to you personally, the expected step is to show off your new status. But how? The perfect proposal deserves an announcement that can match its excitement.

While others may like the subtle relationship status update on Facebook (see the different ways you can announce your proposal here), many others like to show off their news with a photo of the engagement ring.

Does this sound more like you? Let us help! As one of the leading providers for engagement rings in Sydney, we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing hundreds of proposal announcements! So, here are our tips for getting the perfect engagement ring photo without further ado.

Get your nails done in preparation

When it comes to showing off your ring, it is hard to avoid showing your nails! That is why the general golden rule for an engagement ring photo before you do anything else is to get a fresh manicure before you take the picture if you haven’t already had one done. This way, your nails are presentable and don’t diminish the stunning ring.

As for the colour of your nails, try to avoid something too bright. You will want something timeless, an option you won’t regret looking back at years down the track. It is advised that you opt for something complimentary but not too extravagant to distract from the ring. We recommend going for natural colour or a classic French tip.

Make sure you have good lightingphotography lighting

If you’re planning on taking a photo purely of the ring, you definitely don’t want to forget about the lighting! The key to taking a quality engagement ring photo is to ensure good lighting. If you want your ring to sparkle in your image, you need decent light exposure! This is especially true for a cushion cut or round engagement ring where the diamond has many facets.

The best way to get your diamond sparkling is by taking your photo in or around natural lighting. This way, you can get a snap of your sparkling diamond in action! Take your ring outside or near multiple windows during the day with decent exposure and find the best light source to bring out your ring’s brilliance and shine!

      Choose a flatting background

The next step is to think of the background. Places such as green parks, beaches and lookouts are lovely backdrops. You could even have your partner unfocused on in the background! If your nails are neat at the time of the proposal, try taking a photo where your partner popped the question.

Try a nice greenery background such as a hedge if you are taking the photo after the proposal. But make sure not to make it too busy! If you have a bland background and want to get creative, try using a flattering prop like a grey blanket or wooden board behind your hand to give it some texture and interest.

Wear your ring properlypear shaped engagement ring

This point may sound silly, right? Wrong! Not everyone wears their ring correctly when taking a photo. Unless the sizing is too small, we encourage you to ensure your ring is sitting correctly on your finger, past the knuckle.

Furthermore, consider whether you are wearing your ring the right way. Take the pear-shaped engagement ring for example. While the point can go either up or down, it is expected to point upwards when worn.

Experiment with poses and try different angles

When it comes to what the photo should be, you have options. It can be you and your partner smiling with the ring, you and the ring or simply the ring alone.

Try different angles for the most flattering shot if you want the ring itself in focus. Keep the ring close to the camera for extra emphasis, but take it from different viewpoints by moving your hand to a slight angle or from above, etc. Also, make a note to relax your fingers and give them a bend to enhance the dimension of the photo.

Is showing face more your style? An engagement proposal is a momentous moment. Show off the obvious joy on your face by taking a selfie with your ring hand visible. Or share a romantic kiss with your hand displayed in the middle. Otherwise, you could have you and the ring shown to the camera, with your partner holding your hand up for emphasis.

Now that you know our tips, go forth and take a stunning photo to share your exciting news!
