What to do when you love him but not the ring?

The big moment is here!
You watch your partner get down on one knee and slowly reach for their pocket. They find what they need and pull out a ring box — your heart skips a beat.
Placing the box directly in front of you, they ask you the big question. This is the moment you have been anticipating for months. You jump the gun and before you can even see the ring, you excitedly agree to take your relationship to the next level.
But. You turn your attention to the exclusive box and your jaw drops. Not from excitement, but from shock.
The love of your life has proposed with a ring you don’t love! It may sound ironic, but this situation can happen more often than you think.
There are times future brides come face-to-face with an engagement ring they don’t adore as much as they should. Whether it is due to differing preferences or because your partner decided to take a significant risk and go for a bold design, you may not always receive the dream ring you were expecting.
Worried you’ll hurt his feelings by rejecting the ring? Don’t worry. Having designed exclusive engagement rings for couples in Sydney for several decades now, we know how to handle this situation and can help you soften the blow.
To get your happy ending and dream ring, too, keep reading.
Be rational and give your ring time to grow on you
Don’t panic, it just might not have been love at first sight.
You may not have instantly loved the ring, but who is to say you won’t grow to love it? Just because you’ve always dreamed of diamond engagement rings, doesn’t mean a coloured style couldn’t be your new thing?
It may not be the design you always imagined or had in mind, but it can still be a ring that will suit you. Your partner picked this ring with you specifically in mind, so maybe there was a reason they thought it would correlate with your style.
Before you make irrational decisions like finding a new replacement, we recommend you give the ring a bit of time to grow on you. Give it at least a few days on your finger before you write it off entirely. You may surprise yourself and end up liking and cherishing the ring!
If the ring isn’t right, don’t panic – talk to your partner and explain
Can’t seem to fall in love with the ring? It’s ok – you can’t force yourself to love the ring! Sometimes it just isn’t the right match.
If you firmly believe it isn’t the right ring, it is time to sit down with your partner and hit them with the news.
Now, an engagement ring is usually a piece that was picked with thought and care. On top of this, it is also generally an investment your partner has committed to. So, it would help if you kept this in mind when letting them know you’re not that into the ring.
This is your partner who only had the best intentions, so you don’t want to offend or hurt their feelings. It is best to be considerate and kind in the way you let them know. Make it clear that you can’t wait to be their marital partner and you are over the moon that they proposed, but the ring isn’t the right one for you.
See if there is a return or exchange policy on your engagement ring
Once you have dropped the bomb that the ring isn’t your style, explore your options. There are a few things you can do to rectify the situation. Firstly, you should ask where they got the ring and if the jeweller provides an exchange policy.
Most jewellery stores in Sydney offer some form of an exchange policy to guarantee a more suited ring to you. At Midas Jewellery, we are glad to exchange a ring within seven days of purchase if the ring is in the same condition and is with a receipt (we do not refund for incorrect choice).
If the jeweller the ring was purchased from doesn’t offer an exchange policy, you can always seek a jewellery remodelling service. This way, you can work with your ring’s bones to redesign it into something you prefer.
This is a good alternative if you want to keep the original engagement ring but need to alter it into something more fitting for you.
Didn’t get the ring you hoped for? Try to follow all the above steps and hopefully, you’ll get the ring of your dreams. Although you may not be a fan of the ring, we want to wish you a big congratulations on your engagement!
Now that you are engaged, it is time to organise your diamond wedding rings.
