Tips for travelling with your engagement ring

Did you recently get engaged? If you have plans to go on a coastal getaway or fly to a foreign country, you’ll want to make sure you are prepared to travel with your new bling!
Items as precious as your engagement ring must be taken care of during your travels. However, keeping your ring safe will depend on your destination and travel method.
Are you looking to keep your ring safe while travelling away from home? Here are the tips straight from the expert jewellers.
Tips for national travel
About to go on a road trip? Or are you visiting family interstate? If you’re planning to travel around Australia, make sure you are travelling smart so your engagement ring doesn’t get lost or stolen.
If the car is your chosen form of transportation, keep your ring on you at all times. Do not leave the ring in your car, especially overnight! This could be a valuable item that can attract unwanted attention. If you are keeping it in the car between stops, keep it in its box out of view from windows or hidden in the glove box.
Are you planning on actively swimming at beaches or using a pool? Ditch the ring. Activities like this can impact the ring’s quality, not to mention increase the chance of it going missing when you’re out for a swim. Keep the ring dry by putting it aside in a safe spot in its box or a safe when not worn.
Will you spend a lot of time doing physical activities other than swimming? You may find yourself hiking or bike riding if you’re at a popular tourist destination. The last thing you want to do is misplace when out and about!
An itinerary full of adventure may be better off experienced with the ring left back in the hotel rather than out in the wild with you. We understand you might want to show off your ring, but for these activities, it’s important to prioritise practicality and safety.
Tips for travelling internationally
Have you got an exciting trip booked to go overseas? Or are you simply travelling to another country for business? No matter your reason for travel, you should always remain vigilant when travelling to a foreign country with your engagement ring.
The first thing is to make sure your ring travels appropriately. Keep the ring on your hand whilst in the airport, or if you don’t want to wear it on a long trip, put it in your carry-on rather than your checked bag. Putting it in your suitcase increases the chance of it going missing if your luggage is lost, so it is essential to take it on board with you.
Secondly, diamond engagement rings are precious, so the last thing you want is for it to wind up in the wrong hands. We recommend always wearing it and keeping it secured in your room’s security box when it isn’t worn.
Thirdly, depending on the destination, some people prefer to leave their actual engagement ring back home in a safe and take a substitute backup ring. The backup ring could be a dress ring of less value. This means you can still wear a ring that symbolises your engagement ring while out exploring but not experience as much of a loss if something happened while away. With a substitute ring, you also get to worry less about it while you enjoy your trip.
What to remember when travelling in general
Whether on the road or flying abroad, you should always invest in insurance when travelling. We encourage you to look at your existing engagement ring insurance policy before you head on your trip, as it may already cover your ring out of the home. However, if it doesn’t, don’t fear, as multiple options are available to insure your ring.
Generally, home contents insurance won’t cover your engagement ring outside of the home. Fortunately, portable contents insurance is also an option and may be enough coverage when travelling around the country. However, specialised insurance solely for your engagement ring may be your best option in terms of travelling overseas.
Specialised insurance for engagement rings generally offers higher coverage. A lot of them also provide a worldwide cover, meaning if your ring is damaged, lost or stolen when travelling overseas, you’ll have peace of mind it is covered. We recommend double-checking your policy to confirm this is included.
On the other hand, if you don’t travel internationally often and want to be covered for this one-off trip, travel insurance can also include engagement rings. We recommend shopping around and ensuring your ring’s value is reflected.
The last thing to remember is that you have the proper storage solutions for your ring. The original box you purchased it in is a great way to keep your ring in a suitable environment away from other items. You could also use another travel jewellery box to help protect your belongings.
