Proposals and pets: how to get your fur babies involved
February 15, 2022 • 4 min read
When it comes to planning the perfect proposal, diamond engagement rings aren’t always the only thing that will make your partner smile. Sometimes, featuring their fur baby will! Does this sound like your animal-loving partner?
If you’ve been wanting to pop the question but can’t seem to find the right way, why not recruit the help of your loyal companions? From dogs to rabbits, involving your furry little friends can make the moment even more sentimental and awe-inspiring. After all, if there is one thing they love more than diamonds (and you, of course), it’s their beloved pet!
For ideas on how to propose while involving your pets, keep reading.
Have the ring hang from their collar
Subtle yet undoubtedly romantic, having the ring hanging from the collar may be the perfect surprise for your partner! Try to hook the ring to sit next to the nameplate at the front of your pet’s collar so it is more obvious for your partner to spot.
Take advantage of certain times where your partner will be eye level with the collar so they can spot the ring. A good example is a lazy Sunday when your partner wakes up, letting your dog jump on the bed to shower your partner with kisses, so the ring is in their face. Another time is when you are chilling on the couch in the evening.
For a more obvious proposal, give these other tactics a try for your proposal with your pet’s help.
Create a sign or t-shirt asking the question
If you are worried a ring around the collar isn’t apparent enough, try giving them a sign – literally! While the sparkle of our diamond rings is unmissable, sometimes you need to give your partner a clearer indication of your big moment.
There are plenty of adorable options you can organise when it comes to signs. You can create a board to stand next to your little one with the question spelt out. This may be a great idea if you have several fur babies you want involved! Another idea is to play with your pet’s involvement and ask from their perspective, i.e., ‘Mum, will you marry Dad?’.
If you want something smaller, go for a cute miniature tag that you can hang around your pet, so it pairs with the ring around their neck.
Another cute method is to dress your pet up in a customised shirt with the message printed across.
Let your pet lead them to your proposal
Show them how far you’d go for your loved one by training your pet to participate in the proposal by leading your unsuspecting partner to the proposal spot. This method may take some time and a bit of trial and error, but the goal is to try and get your dog to guide your partner to your set-up. Just makes sure to have a lot of treats on hand!
You could be in the backyard and have your dog waiting for your partner to come up, scratching at the door to come out to lead your partner outside. Or, you could have a trail of treats, leading both your pet and partner to a romantic surprise where you’ll get down on one knee.
Other ideas include having a whistle or sound that will summon your pet to where you are.
Surprise them with a new pet member of the family
Don’t have a fur baby to involve in your important milestone? Why don’t you make the surprise an even bigger one by adding to the family!
A proposal will not only show that you are ready for the significant commitment but adding a pet baby into the mix will show you are fully committed to creating a future with your partner. Why not bring out the furry friend first, so it throws your partner off your scent. Then when they least expect it, pop out the ring as the cherry on top.
For the full romantic experience, you could lead your partner to an area set up with flowers and a picnic, bring out your new addition, then follow up with the all-important question.
