Proposing overseas takes effort and time. However, it can also be one of the most rewarding efforts, making it a fantastic time to pop the question.

1. Prepare the ring well in advance of your departure

The first thing is to find the ring! You should do this months before your planned departure date. This is important as finding the ideal ring can be a journey. Not to mention, rings are a piece of art, so it can take a while to craft once you have selected it, especially if you are creating your own custom design.

You should also give yourself enough time to inspect the ring and pick it up. Some slight adjustments may need to be made, so giving yourself this buffer time is recommended. We advise four months in advance.

2. Organise ring insurance

Secondly, you should organise ring insurance for your engagement ring. This is always critical, but even more so if you are travelling with your ring, which, if proposing overseas, you will be. While you may take good care of your ring in transit, sometimes accidents can happen; therefore, it is best to be safe.

Comprehensive ring insurance policies will cover you for the worst-case scenario. This includes accidental breakage, theft or lost items. Having peace of mind knowing your ring is covered on the off chance something was to happen will help keep you calm and collected.

3. Research your destination

Thirdly, before leaving, it is advised you research your proposal destination. This will help you scope out the area and, hopefully, generate a few proposal spots you could pop the big question at. It will also indicate whether an event is held during your stay or if there is a popular location to take advantage of.

Furthermore, researching the destination will allow you to understand the country and customs. Remembering this is always good so you can be respectful with your big plans.

Following your research, once you’ve organised a plan, you should look into any needed services. Whether it be a musician, photographer or caterer, you should book these services in advance for a smooth proposal experience.

Before you book, be sure to look up on social media or Google to verify the selected services. Find other reviews and explore posted photos to get a good idea of what to expect and what you can request.

5. Transport your ring safely

Lastly, you must ensure you get your ring there safely in one piece. This means storing it correctly and in the right bag. Avoid putting the ring in your checked-in luggage. Instead, you should put it in your carry-on so it is always on you.

Furthermore, it would be best if you kept it in the ring box in a secure pocket of the bag. The last thing you want is for it to get damaged while in transit. You also don’t want it to fall out! This way, it remains secure during your travels.
